WEEK 7: Readings

Creators by Lessig
The reading this week deal with intellectual property.  The Lawrence Lessig reading talks about Walt Disney and the doujinshi culture take someone else’s ideas, add to them and present them as their own.  Perhaps, if asked outright, Disney would not deny this fact, but they also do not advertise it.  They do not need to, as they operate within the law.  They simply take part in the “free culture” that our society provides.  They take an original product, add something to it and claim it as their own.
Questions:
-Can you think of any recent examples of this happening?
-Do you believe that our society’s laws are too lenient, and that we should have less free culture?
-If you were Buster Keaton, would you be upset that Disney took Steamboat Bill, Jr and claimed it as their own, or would you be glad that they made it famous?

Tangible Goods by Mitchell
In this reading the idea of Intellectual Property ( IP ) is discussed; furthermore the base of the article speaks of the differences between tangible property compared to information in cyberspace. Mitchell makes metaphors to land, cars, and literature to show the difference between these objects and their tangibility. He also chases the idea of how we can go about protecting our IP. Especially thing that are created for the internet, they can be reproduced so easily it can be hard to use law to prevent theft of ideas. He does a great job of presenting what kind of security is out there and also brings up the fact that the cyber community, for the most part, has a great deal of respect for one another and the involvement of law and politics could ruin these bonds.
Questions:

-Do you believe that the internet community is capable of handling this type of theft on its own, or should there be more heavy law involvement, beyond copyright laws.?
What are you opinions of Mitchell’s metaphors and ideas about IP security?

Can’t wait to hear everyone’s opinions Image may be NSFW.
