The readings this week deal with 3 different takes on the advancement of the design process, 2 of which deal specifically with this process in accordance with transmedia, which is the use of multiple forms of media to tell a story, such as the reference to the Star Wars series in the Jenkins article, where they have been able to build upon the initial story through the use of books, tv, games, etc.
The Jenkins article “Transmedia Storytelling” discussed the issues today that plague the advancement of transmedia storytelling. These issues are mainly due to the economic standpoint of media producers, who are driven by their own monetary goals instead of the wants of the users of the media. These economic interests have led to licensing guidelines and other red tape that prevents the advancement of popular storylines through other mediums. What changes could be made to bring developers of different media together? Can you think of any other example of successful transmedia storytelling?
The Norman article “The Transmedia Design Challenge: Co-Creation” also deals with this issue within the development of transmedia, but focuses more on the adaption of user participation in the development of them. With the advancement of computer technology and the internet we are now more then even able to influence the design. Is there any particular media that you have experienced that makes good use of interactivity and feedback?
The final reading “Designers Are Not Typical Users” & “The Designer’s Clients May Not Be Users,” also by Norman, deals with the issues of designers and usability. The issue brought up is the fact that designers don’t seek enough outside input into the usability of their product (whether a new invention, website, etc.), and that the designers tend to do things that make things easier for themselves, and not necessarily everyone else. What can you do with the development of your web page to improve upon its usability?
